Alien: Romulus – Retro-Futuristic Horror in Space

Alien: Romulus is the latest instalment in the iconic Alien franchise, directed by Fede Álvarez. This film is set between the events of Ridley Scott’s original Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens. It aims to return to the series’ horror roots while introducing new elements.

Plot and Setting

The story follows a group of young colonists working in dead-end mining jobs on a bleak, sunless planet. They discover an abandoned spaceship in orbit and decide to salvage its cryogenic pods to escape their grim reality. The main characters include Rain, played by Cailee Spaeny, and her adoptive brother Andy, portrayed by David Jonsson.

Strengths

  1. Atmosphere and Aesthetics: The film successfully recreates the retro-futuristic, industrial atmosphere of the original films. It is finished with low lighting, jets of steam, and worn-out machinery.  It’s like stepping into a haunted house, but in space, and with more slime.
  2. Character Development: Unlike some of its predecessors, Alien: Romulus focuses on characters who feel like ordinary people. They do not like pre-ordained action heroes. Think of them as the space equivalent of your local barista and accountant, but with more screaming.
  3. Horror Elements: The movie returns to the nerve-racking, monster-movie roots of the franchise, delivering a gripping and sometimes awe-inspiring experience.  It’s like a rollercoaster ride, but with more facehuggers.

Weaknesses

  1. Predictability: While the film is engaging, it doesn’t break much new ground. It relies heavily on familiar tropes from the series.  If you’ve seen one chestburster, you’ve seen them all, right?
  2. Pacing: Some critics noted that the plot is straightforward. It lacks the complexity of earlier films. This might disappoint fans looking for a more intricate narrative. It’s like ordering a gourmet meal and getting a really good burger instead.

Conclusion

Overall, Alien: Romulus is a solid addition to the Alien franchise. It balances nostalgia with fresh elements. This makes it a must-watch for fans of the series. It also offers a thrilling experience for newcomers.
