A Generational Bonding Experience
Taking my eight-year-old son to see Back to the Future: The Musical at the Adelphi Theatre was a memorable adventure. At first, he had no idea what the classic tale was about. But after diving into movie nights and watching all three films together, his excitement skyrocketed. By the time we arrived at the theatre, his anticipation was obvious. At a quick glance, he seemed like the only Generation Alpha in line. However, there were many more inside by the time it started. It was a joy to see the show unfold. I loved watching how much the younger generation embraces this iconic story. They love it just like us ’80s kids.
The DeLorean Takes the Stage
The musical itself is nothing short of extraordinary. The legendary DeLorean graces the stage, creating an instant impact. It sweeps the audience into a delightful whirlwind of nostalgia. Theatrical brilliance abounds. For those unfamiliar with the plot, the story focuses on Marty McFly. He is a teenager who stumbles into 1955. He does this via a time machine created by the eccentric Doc Brown. The musical faithfully follows the original storyline while layering it with dazzling musical numbers, jaw-dropping visuals, and some delightful twists.
Musical Highlights That Hit All the Right Notes

One of the standout moments was “Gotta Start Somewhere,” capturing Marty’s drive to navigate the challenges of the past. The duet “Put Your Mind to It” between Marty and Doc brought the house down with cheers. “Earth Angel” at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance tugged at everyone’s nostalgic heartstrings. It earned thunderous applause. The show’s futuristic-meets-retro stage design, boasting over 300 million LED pixels, added an electrifying edge to the entire experience.
A Cast That Shines Across Time
The performances were exceptional. Caden Brauch delivered a pitch-perfect Marty McFly, while Cory English embodied the quirky genius of Doc Brown with comedic finesse. Sarah Goggin brought Lorraine to life with a heartfelt performance that struck a balance between humour and warmth. The cast’s chemistry amplified every interaction, ensuring the audience stayed enthralled.
The Magic of Stagecraft and Special Effects
Running for 2 hours and 40 minutes (including an interval), the production didn’t shy away from ambitious feats. The DeLorean’s flight sequence was breathtaking, a technical marvel that left the audience awestruck. The creative team faced challenges when adapting time-travel scenes to the stage. However, their innovative use of LED screens and dynamic set pieces ensured a seamless journey through time.
Audience Energy: A Multigenerational Love Affair
The audience reaction was electric, with laughter and cheers echoing throughout the performance. By the finale, the entire theatre erupted into a standing ovation, their love for the story unmistakable. Even my son and I couldn’t resist dancing in our seats and singing along, swept up in the contagious energy.
Honouring a Cultural Classic and Notable Twists for the Stage Version
Reflecting on the cultural significance of Back to the Future, it’s clear why this story remains a timeless treasure. Its themes of friendship, family, and embracing life’s possibilities resonate across generations. The musical honours the original film’s legacy. It breathes fresh life into its narrative. The narrative is full of surprises. It contains a Star Wars reference. There is also a twist on Biff’s infamous manure crash.
A Night of Smiles and Nostalgia
For my son, he couldn’t stop smiling and chatting about his favourite scenes all the way home. This was an experience he’ll treasure forever. And for me, witnessing this shared joy was a reminder of the enduring power of great storytelling. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or discovering it for the first time, Back to the Future: The Musical is an incredible show. Do not miss it. It’s an exhilarating celebration of the past, present, and future.
